Open Letter to Democratic Leadership: Wake Up and Listen to Your Base

Dear Democratic Leadership,

It has come to my attention that you are "pissed" about the calls from activist groups demanding a more aggressive response to the Trump administration’s actions. Let me make something clear: if you are more concerned about the tone of these calls than the message itself, you're missing the point. The frustration that your base feels is a direct result of the same tone-deafness that contributed to your losses in previous elections.

This isn’t just about "getting upset" at criticism; it's about acknowledging that your current approach is failing to inspire confidence in the people who should be your strongest allies. People are angry, people are scared, and people are demanding action. But instead of listening to the calls for real, substantive change, you’re dismissing them—again. Let’s be honest: this isn’t the first time your party has acted as if it’s out of touch with the people it claims to represent. And if you don’t change course, it won’t be the last.

The Republicans are in Washington with machetes. They are cutting away at everything they can, with no regard for the truth, for democracy, or for the wellbeing of this country. Meanwhile, you—Democrats—are walking around with cap guns, pretending that if you stay nice and quiet, everything will somehow work itself out. It’s not working. The base sees it. They hear it. And they’re tired of it.

Let me make this crystal clear: it’s time to get the wax out of your ears and start listening. You can’t keep pretending that a "kinder, gentler" approach is going to win people over when the other side is playing for keeps. The Democratic Party should be the party of action, the party that fights for the people, not the one that stands by and hopes things will magically improve. That’s the kind of complacency that gets elections lost.

If you want to be taken seriously, if you want the base to show up in 2026 and beyond, then you need to show that you hear them. Start by being more aggressive. Not only will it signal to your base that their concerns matter, but it will give them something to rally behind. Right now, all the base hears is silence, and that silence is being interpreted as indifference. And indifference isn’t the message you want to send to the people who want change.

The time for complacency is over. You need to rise to the occasion, or else you're setting the stage for another devastating loss. The base is paying attention. And if you're still dismissing their demands for action, you're setting yourself up for failure in the next election cycle. Are you really trying to lose this next one already?

Democratic leadership needs to stop playing by outdated rules and start acting like the leaders we need in this critical moment. The stakes are too high, and the people are demanding more. It's time to show them that you hear them loud and clear. Don’t wait until it's too late to start listening.

Sincerely,

The Base
